How This Bowl Was Made...

This bowl came from this cherry log.

The log is cut in half, with the grain.

Marking the diameter of the bowl with chalk.

The circle is cut and rounded as much as possible with the chainsaw.

At the lathe, I’ve installed a jour-jaw chuck with an exposed screw
(called a screw chuck).

Now the rough formed bowl blank is mounted on the lathe
by screwing it onto the screw chuck.

While in this orientation, the outside of the bowl
is shaped and a tenon is formed at the bottom of the bowl.

The tenon is now held in the jaws of the chuck,
so that the inside can be hollowed.

Beginning to hollow the inside.

Using an “S” shaped toolrest to get better support inside the bowl.

To turn the foot, the bowl is mounted in reverse and held in place with the tailstock.
Note the soft cloth covering the inside of the bowl to prevent marring the surface.

A small stub is left from where the tailstock was holding the workpiece.
This is chiseled off and finish sanded by hand.

The bowl was finished with a wiping varnish.
