How This Bowl Was Made...

This bowl came from this black walnut log.

The log is cut in half, with the grain.

Marking the diameter of the bowl with chalk.

The circle is cut and trued as much as possible with the chainsaw.
The white on the sides is Anchorseal,
a wax product used to prevent checking.

Using a faceplate, the rounded chunk is mounted on the lathe.

First, the outside of the bowl is shaped.

Straight on view.
The outside is scraped and rough sanded at this point.

Beginning to hollow out the inside.

Using an “S” shaped toolrest to get better support inside the bowl.

To turn the foot, the bowl is mounted in reverse
and held in place with the tailstock.

The bowl, finished with a wiping varnish.
